 To our foreign visitor friends; From Yakushima island
From long ago, an important Japanese trait was, “Consideration”.
Consideration was always considered important when it came to people; but also in connection with all of nature; the sun, the mountains, the rivers, the earth, the air, and all growing things.
You can see this is Yakushima’s Official World Heritage Nature Reserve.
Around the famous Wilson Stump, Japanese Gratitude Cedars have been planted.
In 1586 the lumber jacks felt guilty after cutting down this grand cedar, the Wilson Cedar, so they planted these Japanese cedars as a gesture of gratitude, and to ask forgiveness.
They offered thanks and prayers to nature, and made the stump into a shrine.
Even today, around the Wilson Stump the prayers and natural surroundings create pillars of light that seem to ascend to heaven.
These pillars of light although they can’t be seen with the naked eye, if you try you can sense them.
The Wilson Stump Reserve sends a message to the modern world of our Divinely ordained responsibility for the stewardship of nature.
Should you continue on to see the Ancient Jomon-Sugi Cedar, or return after seeing the Wilson Stump…
It is understandable to want to see the Ancient Jomon Cedar, but traveling there could damage the delicate nature of the area.
Damage that has already been done can be seen on the path to the Jomon Cedar.
So, to see the tree damages the forest.
Attachment to seeing the Jomon Cedar makes one miss the more important aspect, the virtue of “Consideration” to nature.
If you truly understand man’s responsibility to nature, I strongly suggest that you be content with only visiting the Wilson Stump.
But of course it is ultimately your own decision.
Everything has a cause and effect, or, karma.
All the experiences of your life have an effect on your soul.
Please enjoy the Yakushima adventure, and through it help polish your soul into a beautiful work of art.
Yakushima is one of Japan’s best spots to experience this.

The Ancient Trees of Yakushima
「親愛なる外国人旅行者の方々へ」
古来、日本人が最も大切にしてきたものは「思いやり」です。
他人に対する「思いやり」はもちろんですが、太陽・山・川・土・風、
または植物から竈にいたるまで（＝森羅万象について）「思いやり」の気持ちを日本人の祖先は持ち続けてきました。
その証拠が、屋久島の世界自然遺産登録地域内に残っています。
それは、ウィルソン株とその周辺に植えられた御礼杉の区域です。
1586年、キコリ達は史上最大の杉を切ってしまう事の罪を、
周囲に御礼杉を植え、また祀り上げることで、自然に対して懺悔と感謝を捧げました。
今でも、ウィルソン株周辺には、キコリ達の祈りと自然が調和して完成した「天に通じる光の柱」が存在します。
その光の柱は、目に見えませんが、意識さえすれば、あなた達は感じることができるはずです。
ウィルソン株エリアは
「人類の役割（＝天命）は、自然の摂理を知り自然の循環を完成させること。」
というメッセージを現代人に教えています。
●縄文杉まで行くか、ウィルソン株で引き返すか・・・
「縄文杉を一目見たい」という欲望を理解しますが、
その気持ちが自然を少しづつ傷つけています。
その証拠は、実際に縄文杉ルートを歩けば、理解できるはずです。
「縄文杉を見る」ということは、正に「木を見て森を見ず」ということだと私は思います。
執着が視野を狭くさせてしまうために、本当に大切な事柄を見逃してしまうのです。
もし、あなたが人類の天命の理解者ならば、私は
「ウィルソン株で引き返す」という新しい選択を提案します。
ウィルソン株より先に行くか行かないか、それはあなたの考え方次第ですが、
全ての事柄は因果律に則って自分で自分に与えられます。
いずれにせよ自分の判断から生まれた経験こそが、自分の魂を成長させることができます。
どうぞ屋久島の冒険を楽しんで、「あなたの魂」という芸術作品を磨いてください。
屋久島は、日本で最もそれにふさわしい場所のひとつです。
